Job summary

Directs the production activities of an assigned shift.  Supervises subordinate staff and maintains labor time and production records.

Essential functions/key duties & Responsibilities

  • Interprets company policies and procedures, specifications and job orders to workers and enforces safety and food safety regulations.
  • Recommends measures to improve production methods, equipment performance, and quality of product.
  • Confers with other Production Supervisors to coordinate department activities.
  • Maintains labor time and production records.
  • Assists in coordinating the activities concerned with the set-up, adjustment, dismantling, moving, installing, or repairing of machines and equipment.
  • Inventories parts and equipment.
  • Analyzes and resolves work problems, suggests changes in working conditions and use of equipment to increase efficiency of plant, department, or work crew.
  • Verifies conformance of product to specifications.
  • Plans and establishes work schedules, assignments, and production sequences to meet production goals.
  • Inspects materials, products, or equipment to detect defects or malfunctions.
  • Trains and evaluates employees on job performance.
  • Confers with human resources to resolve worker problems, complaints, or grievances.
  • Observes work and monitors gauges, dials, and other indicators to ensure that operators conform to production or processing standards.
  • Operates and trains staff to operate Powered Industrial Trucks.
  • May occasionally perform production duties of subordinate employees.
  • Performs other/additional duties and projects that may be periodically assigned.

Qualifications/skills/abilities

Knowledge of manufacturing, production, safety, food safety, sanitation, and supervisory practices.  Organizational skills and attention to detail needed.  Ability to use good judgment and communicate effectively at all levels inside and outside the company.  Ability to use equipment, tools, machinery and solve complex problems.  Ability to speak, read and write English at the level necessary to successfully perform assigned responsibilities.

Education

High school education or GED required.

Training

Safety, Food Safety, Human Resources, supervisor laws and practices and on-the-job training

Experience (Type & Duration)

2-4 years progressively responsible experience in food processing; or equivalent combination of education and experience requiredMust have a valid Oregon driver’s license.  Prior supervisory experience preferred.  Bilingual Spanish is preferred.

Supervisory Responsibility

Exercises direct supervision over production employees on an assigned shift.  Supervision may include hiring and training, assigning work, evaluating performance, handling grievances, and disciplining employees.
 

Physical/Mental requirements

Continuously uses decision making, interpersonal, customer service, discretion, problem analysis, training/supervising, and basic math skills.  Work includes frequent standing, bending, handling, and repetitive motions of hands/wrists and feet; and continuously walking, talking, and hearing.  Must be able to lift 50 lbs. on a routine basis and push or pull up to 100 lbs. in unusual circumstances.

Work Environment

Work performed in a food processing plant setting.  Job may require extended hours and shift work, with exposure to hazardous chemicals, production machinery, high noise level, and constant standing on concrete surfaces.  Position is also on an on-call status.
