SUMMARY:

 

Assists higher level mechanics in repairing and maintaining machinery, mechanical equipment, and electrical systems in assigned area /department.  Possesses a working knowledge of all machines in assigned area. Adjusts process lines to accommodate type of product being run. Performs preventive maintenance to ensure Food Safety and Food Quality. Ensures safe shutdown and safety lockout/tagout prior to test and repair of equipment.  Works under close supervision.  Must be available to work all shifts, as required.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following.

  1. Assists higher level mechanics in repairing and maintaining machinery, mechanical equipment, and electrical systems in assigned area/department. Must be available to work on all shifts, as required.
  2. Learns from experienced mechanic, a working knowledge of all machines in assigned area/department.
  3. Repairs and replaces defective parts using hand tools and power tools.
  4. Adjusts process lines to accommodate type of product being run. Sets-up conveyors and finishers, and changes piping.
  5. Performs preventive maintenance on machinery as defined in work order.
  6. Uses machine schematics and troubleshooting guides to assist in problem solving.
  7. Ensures safe shutdown safety lockout/tagout of all equipment with tags and individual locks prior to test and repair of equipment.  Conducts test checks following repair of equipment and returns equipment to operational state.
  8. Performs calibration of process monitoring equipment as required.
  9. Completes paperwork as required.
  10. Cleans up all tools and parts after work has been completed.
  11. Reports any Food Quality or Food Safety issues to the Supervisor immediately.

ADDITIONAL JOB DUTIES

  • Inspects fire sprinkler systems.
  • Operates forklift

 

ADDITIONAL EQUIPMENT, TOOLS AND SAFETY GEAR

  •   Uses screwdriver, wrenches, and other hand tools.  The employee provides hand tools used in regular daily operations.
  • Uses drills, grinders, and other power tools.
  • Uses multi-meter and other meters used in testing.
  • Uses forklift and scissor lift.
  • Uses respirator/SCBA when required

Education/Knowledge/Experience:

High school degree is not required.  Position requires mechanical attitude and prior mechanical work experience, such as that of a Mechanic 4.  Maintenance knowledge is greater than that of a Mechanic 4.  Possesses a working knowledge of all machines in assigned area/department.

Language Skills:

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.  Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to communicate and understand information one-on-one and in small groups.  English required.

Mathematical Skills:

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide using all units of measure using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.

Reasoning Ability:

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form. Ability to make routine decisions.

Physical Demands:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to walk to maneuver around machinery; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls, reach with hands and arms, and stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl when maneuvering in and around machinery to perform repairs; and climb or balance when repairing electrical systems in the ceiling. The employee frequently required to stand and monitor machine operation.

The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds when moving motors and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds when moving large objects for repair. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus.

Work Environment:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works near moving mechanical parts.  Employee is occasionally exposed to warm and/or cold environments while checking or repairing processing equipment.

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate

Must wear all personal protective equipment applicable to department.

Ability to work all shifts and changing times within shift.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:

Certified by Knouse Foods as a forklift driver.  Must watch safety videos, and pass written and driving test, on a regular basis.

Must be face fit-tested, complete training, and pass physical fitness exam by designated physician when required to wear a respirator or SCBA.

Must successfully complete HAZWOPER annual training/recertification when assigned to Refrigeration.
